Approximately 20,000 objects. Over 50% relate to the shipbuilding, heavy engineering and armaments work of Barrow Shipyard. Other industries represented include iron-mining, iron and steel production and the Furness Railway. Also, extensive social history collections, as well as fine and decorative art, natural history and geology.

Key artists and exhibits

  • The Dock Museum has a superb collection of ship models donated by the Barrow shipyard. Newly added to the collection is TSS Oriana, a very unusual mechanised model from the early 1960s. The film show is very popular with visitors, six minute films explain the mushroom-like expansion of Barrow in the nineteenth century, today's Barrow and the history of the shipyard.

Hands-on sessions
There are object handling sessions for:
• 19th century life in Victorian Barrow
• Barrow during the Second World War
There is also a Victorian dressing up session in conjunction with the Victorian tour.
Each object handling session lasts 45 minutes and are free of charge. Booking in advance is essential.

The Teaching Collection Loans Boxes (KS1 & 2)

The museum has a number of collections available for loan to teachers, either in conjunction with a visit to the Dock Museum, or for use with classroom based activities. They are not available by mail order.
This service is provided free of charge. Advanced booking is essential. If you wish to book a loans box please contact us.

The museum has six different quizzes and a master copy can be obtained in advance for photocopying for the class.
Town Trail
Available to download is a Town Trail leaflet created by children for children (available below and from The Dock Museum). A lesson plan prepared by a teacher is also available to download. This could cover History Unit 12 "How did life change in our locality in Victorian times" or Geography Units 3 "Investigating our local area" and/ or Unit 13 "A contrasting UK locality".

Access For All - Special Needs

The Dock Museum spans three floors and is fully accessible to wheelchair users, as is our landscaped waterfront site. We also have a hearing loop on our film show, information in Braille and large print, plus a manual wheelchair available for use during your visit.
Touch tours for those with visual impairments are available if required, whether you are a group or an individual visiting. Please let us know in advance if you require this service.
Parking for disabled drivers is available close to the main entrance and on the main museum car park. If you wish to have a space reserved, please contact us in advance of your visit.
