Oldham’s museum and gallery service dates back to 1883. Over the last 120 years Oldham Art Gallery and Museum has established itself as the cultural focus of a town that was built around the cotton and engineering industries and has developed one of the largest and most varied permanent collections in the North West of England.

The current collections include over 12,000 social and industrial history items, more than 2,000 works of art, about 1,000 items of decorative art, more than 80,000 natural history specimens, over 1,000 geological specimens, and about 3,000 archaeological artefacts. A complementary collection of 15,000 photographs and a large number of books and pamphlets is held by Oldham Archives and Local Studies Library.

Inspired by Civilisations

An exhibition of Gallery Oldham's collection featuring objects inspired by Civilisations. Civilisations is a major 9-part series on BBC 2 starting March 2018, exploring the visual culture of societies from around the globe. The exhibition coincides with a UK-wide festival running from 2nd – 11th March 2018 with events inspired by Civilisations. The exhibition has been made possible with Art Fund support.

Chinese Export Coffee Cup, 1800s

Inspired By Civilisations: Ceramic Workshop

  • 3 March 2018 1-4pm

A ceramic decorating workshop using porcelain pens and paints. Taking inspiration from the exhibition Inspired by Civilisations. Take elements from the decoration and features of the objects and create a unique coffee cup to take home with you.

Inspired By Civilisations: Monoprinting Workshop

  • 3 March 2018 10am-1pm

A printmaking workshop using mono printing Gelli plates. The printmaking uses normal acrylic paints so are very safe for children and not too messy. Taking inspiration from the exhibition Inspired by Civilisations. Take elements from the decoration and features of the objects and create a unique printed artwork to take home with you.
