Bolton Steam Museum is operated by the Northern Mill Engine Society. It is located in a former cotton warehouse of the old Atlas Mills complex, now on Morrison's supermarket site off Chorley Old Road, Bolton. The museum contains over 25 old textile mill steam engines which have been rescued and restored to working order by our volunteers.

Over 25 textile mill stationary steam engines have been rescued and restored to working order. These include some very rare and unusual types of engine. We have 2 beam engines, horizontal, vertical and inverted vertical engines, steam pumps, barring engines and a special 'stenter' engine donated by our late President, Fred Dibnah.

Spring Steaming at Bolton Steam Museum

Volunteers from the Northern Mill Engine Society have restored over 27 old stationary steam engines. The collection includes 2 rare beam engines (the oldest is 180 years old!), and many more of different types. We have the largest working collection of old textile mill engiines in the country (and probably the largest in the world!)
