The former home of John Ruskin, Brantwood is the most beautifully situated house in the Lake District. Brantwood is both a treasure house of historical importance and a lively centre of contemporary arts and the environment, welcoming in the region of 30,000 visitors a year.

Displays and activities in the house, gardens and estate reflect the wealth of cultural associations associated with Ruskin’s legacy – from the Pre Raphaelites and Arts and Crafts Movement to the founding of the National Trust and the Welfare State.

With its many contemporary exhibitions, concerts, courses and special events, together with its education work in the wider community, Brantwood continues in the Ruskin tradition today.

‘The Mirror’s Magic Sights’ John Ruskin and the Daguerreotype

  • 3 June — 21 September 2014 *on now

When the earliest photographs - or ‘Daguerreotypes - appeared, Ruskin declared them ‘the most marvellous invention of the century’.

He was an early adopter of the technology and assembled a large and important collection of images of European landscapes and architecture which he variously commissioned or purchased, including some of the earliest photographs of the high Alps ever taken.

Unfurl - Prints by Laura Sowerby

  • 28 June — 31 August 2014 *on now

Laura’s prints evoke an intimate experience with nature.

Produced from her studio on the Lakeland Fells, the work is inspired by and drawn directly from the surrounding flora and fauna.

The detail in the initial drawing is recorded with all the relish of a botanical artist but the work goes further; compositions are worked up and produced as gloriously coloured, hand-pressed linocut prints.
