Armagh County Museum is located on the Mall, an area of urban parkland in the centre of the city. The unique character of the Museum's architecture makes it one of the most distinctive buildings in Armagh, similar in appearance to a little Greek temple! The oldest County Museum in Ireland, its extensive collections are based on specimens gathered by the Armagh Natural History and Philosophical Sociey during the 19th century.

When Armagh County Museum opened to the public in 1937, it inherited a collection of objects from the Armagh Natural History and Philosophical Society who previously occupied the building. This cabinet of curiosities included material from abroad as well as from neighbouring counties. Through a combination of generous donations and astute purchases the collections have expanded and now focus on material specifically related to County Armagh.

Reflecting the rapid changes in lifestyles, industry and the built environment, the Museum also collects a representative sample of modern material so that future generations can look back at life in county Armagh towards the end of the 20th century.

The collections have been arranged under a number of headings, reflecting the displays.

Armagh Photographic Competition and Exhibition

26 April — 15 June 2013 *on now

This annual photographic exhibition and competition attracts entries from all over Northern Ireland.

Running for over 10 years this long-established photographic competition and exhibition will open to the public on Friday, 26th April. The Photograph by Lauren Crooks entitled Busy Bee (winner in under 12 section 2012) competition includes a range of different categories including colour, black and white, historic Armagh and an Under 18 and Under 12 section.

The competition will be judged this year by Brian Mason from Richhill, a keen photographer. Judging a competition like this is not easy. Deciding on the final short list was a great challenge, particularly in the colour category which was the most difficult to decide upon.

Every winner in each section will receive Bennetts vouchers and the best overall image will be presented with the Bennett’s cup.

The exhibition will continue until 15th June 2013.The competition is free to enter and open to everyone, for more information download an entry form visit the website link below.
