Housesteads is the most complete example of a Roman fort in Britain, and one of the most popular sites on the Wall. Perched high on the exposed Whin Sill escarpment, it commands breathtaking views. Explore four double-portal gateways, the turreted curtain wall, three visible barrack blocks and, of course, the famous and well-preserved latrines.

Hadrians Wall Live! - Tales from the Wall

Our costumed Romans will help you explore this stunning hill top fort with stories of Roman Britain.

The charismatic characters will regale you with tales of times gone by. How was life on the edge of the Roman Frontier.

How did the gigantic 73 mile long wall impact the landscape and people living within its shadow?

All these questions and more will be revealed in this entertaining and lively performances during one of our many Hadrian’s Wall Live events over this special weekend.

Hadrians Wall Live! - Night Time Patrol

English Heritage invites you to explore Britain’s most iconic Roman Fort at night.

This Hadrian’s Wall Live event will offer you a unique opportunity to see the legionary guard of Legio I Italica patrol Housesteads Roman Fort and Hadrian’s Wall by torchlight. With preparations for battle being made, listen to the songs of the legion and immerse yourself in this Roman fort with the sights and sounds of an Italian legion at dusk.

This is an authentic Roman experience unique to Northumberland and not to be missed this September.

Meet a Roman Soldier Discovery Visit

Explore Roman military life and discover how the building of Hadrian's Wall affected the local population in remarkably different ways. Meet Roman Officer Centurion Maximus and discover what life was like on the frontier. Take on the role of a recruit and be taken through duties using drama and role play. Recruits will tour both inside the fort and the remains of the settlement beyond, using replica and real artefacts found near Hadrian's Wall to find out about the lives of soldiers and the civilians who lived at Housesteads.
