This Small Folk Museum was formed in 1985 by a group of volunteers in their third age. It is housed in the former Manse to High House Chapel, which is now the oldest Methodist Chapel in the World which has been in continuous weekly use since its foundation in 1760.

A nineteenth century period kitcen depicting life for leadminer/farming families,
The Wesley Room which houses Methodist artefacts from the Wesleyan and Primitive traditions from 1760 and the 13 visits of John Wesley to High House Chapel,
The 1788 Westgate Subscription Library,
A superb collection of crystalized minerals and fossils
The complete census for Stanhope Parish 1841-1901 and other genealogical resources.

Heritage Open Days: High House Methodist Chapel and Weardale Museum

High House Methodist Chapel is the oldest purpose built Methodist Chapel in continuous weekly use. Built in 1760 it is listed by Simon Jenkins as 'one of England's Thousand Best Churches'.
Seen in conjunction with the adjoining Weardale Museum which occupies the old manse you will learn of John Wesley's amazing missionary journeys to convert the lead mining population of the North Pennines, view the remarkable Weardale Tapestry and much more. The Weardale Museum has achieved an award from Art Council as an outstanding volunteer run museum.
