The Museum of Antiquities is the joint museum of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is the principal museum of archaeology in north east England. Its visitors are those who wish to know more about the history of the region, especially Hadrian's Wall and the Roman frontier.

The Museum is closing, permanently, from April 19 2008. Collections will be moved to the Great North Museum, opening in 2009.

The Museum continues to offer online resources through its website.

It has a renowned collection of artefacts, models and archives relating to the Wall, and a full-scale reconstruction of the Temple to Mithras at Carrawburgh. Other displays illustrate the variety of life in the region from early prehistory to the 17th century.

The Museum is closing, permanently, from April 19 2008. Collections will be moved to the Great North Museum, opening in 2009.

The Reticulum Project presents downloadable learning resources focusing on life in northern England during the Roman period. These are aimed primarily at children in Key Stage 2 but the emphasis on accuracy of information as well as the informal style is designed to appeal to a wider audience. A teacher's pack is available as a free download, along with games, interactives and suggestions of activities and discussion topics, and a forum with examples of other schools' work.

SINE (Structural Images of the North East) Project

Structural Images of the North East is a comprehensive collection of images celebrating the structural heritage of Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham and Teesside. Many of these photographs, sketches, paintings, etchings and drawings dating from around 1715 to 2004 have never before been publicly available.
Browse the collection or search for specific structures and images, from lampposts to lighthouses and collieries to castles. Visit our InterACTIVE Zone to view on-line exhibitions, play games or to set out on a learning journey. An interactive game based on pictures of buildings from the Structural Images of the North East collection. Designed to be played against the computer, players can set the level of difficulty as they examine a structure and assess how highly the building would score in terms of defensibility and sacredness, when it was built, and what it would have been used for.
