Chesters Roman Fort was built to guard the Roman bridge which carried Hadrian's Wall over the River North Tyne. The entire foundations of the headquarters building are visible and, down by the river, the bath house is extremely well preserved. The newly-refurbished museum displays a collection of Roman finds retrieved by local antiquarian John Clayton.

King Arthur's Cavalry

Meet a Roman Soldier Discovery Visit

Discover why the Romans came to Britain and what life was like on the frontier. Meet Roman officer Centurion Maximus and take on the role of a recruit. Through drama and role play, recruits will learn more about the arms and armour of a Roman soldier, take part in a military drill and explore the fort.
