Bede's World celebrates the extraordinary life and achievements of the Venerable Bede (AD 673 - 735) who lived and worked here in the monastery 1300 years ago.

Visit:
- Interactive permanent exhibition "The Age of Bede" in the stunning new museum building
- Historic site of the Anglo-Saxon monastery of St Paul and medieval monastery ruins
- Rare breeds of animals, recreated Anglo-Saxon timber buildings and ancient varieties of crops and vegetables on Gyrwe, the Anglo-Saxon demonstration farm
- Herb garden, based on Anglo-Saxon and medieval herbs, and laid out partly to a 9th century plan

Collection of the material excavated on the site of St Paul's Monastery between 1963 and 1978 under the direction of Professor Rosemary Cramp. Also a collection of material relating to the history and inhabitants of Jarrow Hall, built in 1785.

Anglo-Saxon life

Find out about life in a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village when you visit Gyrwe, our demonstration farm. Learn about and see the animals, buildings, crops and skills of the people of the time. Pupils will also have the opportunity to handle replica artefacts and observe displays in the new museum.

Time: 1 hour 45 minute session led by a fully trained member of Bede's World's Education Service. Usual start times: 10am and 1pm
Cost: £1.85 + VAT per pupil
Note: This visit will be modified in bad weather.

Boy at the monastery

An opportunity to dress in habits and process into the chancel of St. Paul's Church, Jarrow, the only surviving monastic building of Bede's time in Jarrow. Find out about monastic life at the time of Bede, and what it would have been like for him entering the monastery at the age of seven. You will discover where the Anglo-Saxon monastic buildings were and look at the chancel's exterior features. This visit includes time in the new museum to look at displays and a model of the monastery.
