Admiral Cochrane, The Real Master and Commander

7 October 2011 — 19 February 2012 *on now

There is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to discover the true story of one of the world’s most adventurous seafarers, who inspired classic books and films such as Master and Commander, Captain Horatio Hornblower, and Mr Midshipman Easy. The inspiration came from the extraordinary life of one Scotsman, the naval officer Lord Cochrane, whose real story, his spectacular rise and fall – and rise again – is as incredible as anything in fiction. This is a rare chance to explore the authentic evidence of Cochrane’s life and times through an extraordinary collection of awards, personal possessions, private papers and dramatic paintings never seen together before.

Admiral Cochrane, The Real Master and Commander – closing soon!

7 October 2011 — 19 February 2012 *on now

This is your last chance to see our special exhibition charting the life and times of Scotsman and naval adventurer Admiral Lord Cochrane. The inspiration for the classic books and films of high-seas adventure, Cochrane’s real story is as incredible as anything in fiction.

Cochrane was a brilliant tactician, a hero of the Royal Navy in the age of Nelson, a trouble-making politician, a far-sighted innovator, and a man of action who took risks. His headstrong character made his name a byword for controversy, but no one could argue with the skill that made him a champion of the new nations of Chile, Brazil and Greece.

Explore Cochrane’s life through a fascinating collection of personal possessions and dramatic paintings – a hoard of treasures that have never before been seen together.

Visitor feedback

"Wonderful exhibition. The museum is to be commended in bringing all of this together."

"Excellent exhibition bringing together so many items connected to Lord Cochrane, one of Scotland’s finest heroes."
