Ghost Stories After Dark

  • 16 May 2014 7-8:30pm, 9:30-11pm

Hear ghosts, ghouls and ghastly tales at Belsay Hall after nightfall with 'A Warning to the Curious' by M.R. James. Arguably one of the best ghost story tellers of all time, James redfined ghost stories by using realistic settings. His stories were intended to be read aloud, and what better place to hear them than inside an eerie and empty historic country house after dark. Part of Museums at Night.

Wild Week at Belsay

  • 24 May — 1 June 2014

The Wildman of Belsay is a character illustrated in the Middleton Family’s Coat of Arms. He was of great importance to the family and can be found in paintings and stone carvings, some of which can still be seen today in the Castle. To celebrate the installation of the Wildman statue in Belsay’s Hall, we’re going wild this half term! Imagine if a 'wildman' still roamed the grounds of Belsay, where would he live? Amongst the deep, cavernous Quarry Garden in a hovel, lair or den? Join our artist den-builder, as he’ll show children how to build their very own den.

This free download showcases details of Belsay interior design, suggesting how they can support school work from using symmetry and balance to counting number patterns. The worksheets can be photocopied to enable children to sketch the architectural features they spot. There are also suggestions for creating Belsay guidebook and guided tour, in groups or as a class.
