There's something for everyone at Belsay. Explore a spectacular medieval castle, a Greek Revival 19th-century mansion and thirty acres of stunning Grade I gardens linking the two. In the gardens, unaltered for 200 years, you'll discover thousands of exotic species, famous rhododendrons and the magical Quarry Garden, with ravines, pinnacles and sheer rock faces inspired by the quarries of Sicily.

Head Gardener Tour

Join our resident Head Gardener and explore the spectacular Belsay Gardens including the unique Quarry Garden: a fantasy of ravines, pinnacles and exotic plants. Make your way through our stunning Grade 1 listed gardens packed with an impressive array of shrubs and flowers - not to be missed! Hot drinks and a bacon sandwich will follow the tour. This tour has been graded as moderate access due to the amount of time spent outside.

Playing in the woods

Little Wildones

  • 1 August 2014 11am-5pm

Bring your Little Wildones to Belsay for the day dressed as a Wildman or Wildwoman.

They can play hide and seek in our big historic house, hunt for the Wildman in our Jurassic style gardens and spot the Wildman carvings in the Manor House. ]

Plus, take part in our daily summer event, 'Hands on History: Wild Crew' with a range of wild children's interactive activities including mask and mural making.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

This summer, discover myths and legends at Belsay, including that of the Wildman, a mythical character who was a symbol of strength and the untamed. The headless statues of the Belsay Wildman and Wildwoman now sit guarding the Pillar Hall. During the holidays, our Wild Crew will take you back to the good ol’ wild days with a range of kids interactive activities including mural painting, mask making and much more.

Knights' Tournament

Marvel at our noble knights as they take on the ultimate medieval tournament. Swords will be wielded, archery skills tested and helmets battered as these skilled men are put to the test in each nail-biting round. Who will reign supreme and become champion? Who will you support? Soak up the sights and sounds of medieval encampments as food is cooked on open fires and the past is brought to life as medieval folk go about their daily lives. Try your hand at archery and laugh at our silly jester. And let your little knights feel the weight of real armour and burn off energy in battle drills.
