Dating back to 1828, the museum houses a diverse Natural History collection covering the whole of the animal kingdom. Retaining an air of the avid Victorian collector, the museum contains cases packed full of skeletons, mounted animals and specimens preserved in fluid.

Pandora's Box: Curiosity and the Dangerous Pursuit of Knowledge

An installation of cabinets of curiosities and stories by artist, writer and filmmaker Amanda Schiff with photographs by Jane Wildgoose. When Pandora ignored advice and opened the box, she unleashed all the troubles of the world. Knowledge is a dangerous and unstable pursuit, but it has many rewards. We invite you to indulge your curiosity and inquire within – come what may.

Nocturnal Nature

Find out whether stuffed animals really do come to life at the end of day. Enjoy a torchlit tour of the museum and seek out special exhibit labels all about the creatures that come out after dark. From bats to badgers and owls to aye-ayes, discover how animals have evolved to live without light in this late opening with drinks reception. No booking necessary.

This Island Earth (1955) on the Big Screen

Originally taglined as “The supreme excitement of our time!”, this classic sci-fi flick follows the adventures of nuclear physicist Cal Meacham. After experiencing a series of unexplained incidents, Meacham is put in contact with a mysterious man called Exeter. This silver-haired, perma-tanned, and suspiciously high-foreheaded fellow invites him join a secret research project based in Georgia. Almost inevitably, all turns out to be more than it originally seems...
The film will be introduced by science historian Dr. Joe Cain (UCL Science and Technology Studies) and a private view of the museum and complimentary drinks reception will follow the film.

Spend your half-term discovering some watery wildlife in these fin-tastic family fun days at the Grant Museum. You’ll have a whale of a time as you dive into a host of handling activities, involving our sharks, shellfish, corals, crabs and other aquatic animals. Celebrating International Year of Biodiversity 2010 and World Oceans’ Day on June 8th. Suitable for gulls and buoys of all ages, and free of charge – so no need to shell out!
