Alien Sex Capsule

  • 19 August — 29 September 2017 *on now

Preview night Friday 18th August, 6-8pm

The British artist will transform Artlink’s gallery space into a multimedia, multi-sensory and immersive show exploring the relationship between visual culture and HIV today.

Alien Sex Capsule is formalised around the ‘cruise maze’ – a structure common to sex clubs and gay sauna. Using the maze as a directive mechanism Walter’s guides the viewer through a carnival like space filled with painting, sculptural and video pieces converging conversation and research on the complex subject of contemporary sexual health today.

Through this interactive process Walter’s intention is that the visitor is fully immersed into it a multi-sensory yet welcoming environment in which hospitality, fortune-telling and comedy are all used to introduce difficult issues to a wide audience and make the subject palatable and interesting with a bit of fun and light humour thrown in.

So he pulled the right levers, and you did the asking, A Show by Brian Griffiths

  • 9 October — 14 December 2017

For this new exhibition the sculptor Brian Griffiths has invited a number of friends, family and colleagues (mostly real) to make puppets. Each person has been asked to make a puppet of themselves - a self portrait, a kind of imposter or impersonator, like all representations.

The puppet in its purest form and motion resembles something of the artifact, tool, machine or musical instrument. They are contradictory things to be looked at and spoken through, that are animated and brought to life via imagination and will.

All the puppets at Artlink Hull are made by puppet novices, from individuals with radically different making experiences and resources. Purity and traditions may come a cropper and things may just stay dead.

An exhibition as part fantasy, part social experiment, with the theatrical gusto of LET’S-PUT-ON-A-SHOW! Griffiths considers ideas and forms of self-presentation, where intimate content gets swept along with the impossibly dramatic.

A show that hopes for hilarious disappointments, irresistible charm and some visitors.
