The Lowry houses the biggest public collection of works by L S Lowry. In 2000 it was transferred from its original home at Salford Art Gallery that had begun collecting his work in the 1930s. The collection now numbers around 350 paintings and drawings, ranging across Lowry's artistic career. Different works from the collection are shown, alongside pictures loaned from other public and private collections, in changing, themed exhibitions. The Lowry is a place where art and people meet. You can see the best in the visual arts presented in lively and engaging ways. The familiar is juxtaposed with the unfamiliar alongside exhibitions exploring the Lowry collections, there is a programme of modern and contemporary art of diversity and appeal. There are up to 16 exhibitions per year, each generally lasts for 3 months, with occasional shorter projects and events.

LS Lowry - The Art & The Artist
- 1 November 2014 — 1 November 2018 *on now
The Lowry houses the largest public collection of paintings and drawings by LS Lowry in the world.
This summer we’re pleased to open a complete re-display of the Collection - with more gallery space than ever before dedicated to the Salford artist, along with new interpretation and new loans from across the UK. Featuring some of his most famous and important works this exhibition shows an artist remarkable for his diversity and fearless innovation.
Claire Stewart, curator of The Lowry Collection at The Lowry, said: “We’re proud to house the world’s largest public collection of Lowry work – and in extending the exhibition in this way we further strengthening that position as the home of LS Lowry.
“Some of the new works on display haven’t been seen in public for many years and we are grateful to the owners for the opportunity to present them to our gallery visitors. This new exhibition will also look at Lowry’s contemporaries and highlight what life was like in in Salford in the early 1900s.”
There are over 400 works in the collection, 57 of which are oil paintings. Alongside the works of art is an archive containing thousands of items ranging from photographs to press cuttings and exhibition catalogues. Both the collection and archive were formed by Salford Museum & Art Gallery and transferred to The Lowry in 2000. A selection of highlights from the Collection can always be seen on display in our permanent LS Lowry - The Art & The Artist exhibition alongside works on loan from important private collections throughout the UK.
