The collection now numbers around 350 paintings and drawings, ranging across Lowry's artistic career. Different works from the collection are shown, alongside pictures loaned from other public and private collections, in changing, themed exhibitions. The Lowry is a place where art and people meet. You can see the best in the visual arts presented in lively and engaging ways. The familiar is juxtaposed with the unfamiliar alongside exhibitions exploring the Lowry collections, there is a programme of modern and contemporary art of diversity and appeal. Behind the Mask

  • 20 — 11 January 2015

Behind the Mask, the biggest collection of BAFTA-winning actor portraiture ever assembled, comes to The Lowry for its first time out of London.

Featuring portraits of over one hundred international stars, Behind The Mask is a photographic census of actors and actresses who have won or been nominated for a BAFTA since 1954.

The exhibition is a collaboration between BAFTA Archive & Heritage and renowned celebrity photographer Andy Gotts MBE, who was sent across the globe to photograph subjects including Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, Sidney Poitier and the late Lauren Bacall and Robin Williams.

Andy Gotts MBE said: “Even though I have been given the title 'celebrity photographer' I have always seen myself as a photographer of actors. I have always been a movie buff and getting the opportunity to meet my matinée idols is beyond a dream come true.

"I specialise in character studies of the face and try to show a new and different side of world famous faces in my ‘warts and all’ style.”

The BAFTA Archive develops, cares for and seeks to make accessible a collection that focuses on the history of the Academy.
