Lauderdale House

Built in 1582, Lauderdale House is an arts and education centre based in the beautiful Waterlow Park. We run an extensive programme of performances, workshops, outreach projects and exhibitions. We also hire our historic galleries for parties and weddings.

Lauderdale House runs a broad range of educational, community, and creative projects in addition to its regular programme of classes, performances, and exhibitions.

We enjoy working with different partners, and in the past we have been involved with exciting projects such as creating grass sculptures with young people with learning difficulties from the local Harington Scheme, and professional artist Kathryn Jordan. The sculptures were then exhibited on the tea lawn at the back of the House.

Picnic Jazz with John Etheridge's Sweet Chorus

  • 9 July 2015 7-7:30pm

Bring along your picnic basket and your blanket for a chance to enjoy John Etheridge's Sweet Chorus perform on Lauderdale's Tea Lawn. John Etheridge formed Sweet Chorus in 1998 as a personal tribute to Stephane Grappelli, the greatest violinist of Jazz, with whom he had toured for many years in the late 70s and early 80s. The band takes its cue from the great Reinhardt /Grappelli repertoire of 1930s classics but is in no way a slavish imitation of that music . Inspired by Grappelli’s always questing spirit, the band evinces dazzling forays into repertoire from all periods ..always engaging and committed.

Poetry in the House

  • 22 July 2015 From 8pm

The Mahabharata, the ancient world’s longest, and arguably greatest, epic poem, was composed in India about 2000 years ago. Seven times as long as the Iliad and the Odyssey combined (and, according to one scholar, ‘a hundred times more interesting’), it is a compelling story of heroism, rivalry, love, wickedness, spiritual teaching and much more beside. In a new verse retelling, Carole Satyamurti has rendered the epic for modern readers, aiming to convey the richness and power of the original. The evening will consist of an introduction to the book and extracts read by Mimi Khalvati, Shanta Acharya, D.M. Black and Martin Wilkinson. There will be time for discussion and questions.
