Life is an independent educational charity that aims to engage the local community with science in a fun and interactive environment. Life hosts a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions alongside a rolling programme of science shows. Times Square cafe is on site offering a range of food and Starbucks coffee, and a the gift shop is full of scientific goodies for all the family.

In the Experiment Zone you can explore how 'proper' science is done, carry out practical experiments using professional tools and equipment and meet real-life scientists, all included in the admission price to the Centre. Work alone or enlist the help of one of Life's friendly Science Explainers - it is up to you!

Game On 2.0

Explore the vibrant history, culture and future of gaming entertainment and technology through more than 100 playable games. Retro lovers can play on consoles from the 1970s and there’s a dedicated arcade games section, including Pac-Man, Defender and Donkey Kong. Your gaming journey takes you through the decades up to contemporary favourites, including Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 with games such as Halo 3, Wii Sports Resort and Rock Band.

Game On 2.0 takes an in-depth look at the people and technologies that have revolutionized games and how we play them. See the design process from concept to packaging for some of the most important games of recent times: Donkey Kong, Pokémon, Spore, Uncharted, World of Warcraft, Tomb Raider and The Sims.

The exhibition gives a global take on video games, the highlights include an exploration of the influence of manga and anime on computer games; films that have been influenced by and influenced computer games; online gaming, music composed for games and new games technologies.

Please note: food and drinks are not allowed in the exhibition.

Artatomy is an exhibition of anatomy inspired artworks created by medical and biomedical science students. This project is hosted by Newcastle Medical School in collaboration with Dr Iain Keenan, visual artist Rachael Allen, and four medical students. Funded by Newcastle Institute of Creative Arts Practice Award 2014. Artwork pictured was created by Eliza Davison, a 4th year medical student at Newcastle University.

SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D: The Great Jelly Rescue (4D Motion Ride)

Join SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy on a wildly hilarious 4-D adventure to rescue the Jellyfish of Jellyfish Fields from Plankton's evil clutches. Experience every twist, turn, high and low as your seat moves in time to the 3D action on screen. You can expect to be blasted with wind, smoke and water, and you'll even be able to smell the action! For safety reasons you have to be at least 1.2 metres in height to use the Motion Ride.

Water fun at Pre-school day

Pre-School Day

Led by Life's friendly Science Explainers, Pre-school days have a range of fun activities to encourage youngsters to play and learn about science. Activities include Piccolo Music workshops; mini-beast handling and a toddler bubble disco alongside new activities, so that every event is different. Access to the hands-on Young Explorer's Zone and special planetarium show 'Little Bear' is also included in your pre-school ticket. Please note: For all sessions, we advise that the ratio should be 1 adult to a maximum of 3 children.

Professor Susan Greenfield

Mind Change: How Digital Technologies are Leaving Their Mark on our Brains.

  • 9 July 2015 6-7pm

This lecture is a special event for Game On 2.0. Neuroscientist, writer and broadcaster Professor Susan Greenfield believes long exposure to computers and computer gaming is harmful to the human brain. Her book, Mind Change was published in August 2014. In Mind Change, Professor Greenfield discusses the all-pervading technologies that now surround us. In her view they are creating a new environment, with vast implications, because our minds are physically adapting: being rewired. Using the very latest research, Mind Change is intended to incite debate as well as yield the way forward. Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE, is a British scientist, writer, broadcaster and member of the House of Lords. Suitable for ages 14+.

Music and comedy at Bright Club

Bright Club

Bright Club offers a platform for comedy, music, performance, science and new writing. Each brave performer has an eight minute set – and any subject goes – making for some seriously unpredictable entertainment. Summer Science Camp

Summer Science Camp

  • 20 — 24 July 2015

Summer Science Camp is five day event for 13 to 18 year olds, there will be the chance to do lots of exciting and cool stuff! Participants can learn to tinker, make and create, do amazing chemical experiments, make friends and influence people through science busking, help build a seismograph that can record earth quake tremors and measure the disturbance caused by their experiments. They can also play on the world’s biggest collection of computer games in the Science Centre which is home to Game On 2.0 throughout the summer.
