Life is an independent educational charity that aims to engage the local community with science in a fun and interactive environment. Life hosts a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions alongside a rolling programme of science shows. Times Square cafe is on site offering a range of food and Starbucks coffee, and a the gift shop is full of scientific goodies for all the family.

In the Experiment Zone you can explore how 'proper' science is done, carry out practical experiments using professional tools and equipment and meet real-life scientists, all included in the admission price to the Centre. Work alone or enlist the help of one of Life's friendly Science Explainers - it is up to you!

Celebrate the Hubble Telescope in this brand new Planetarium show. Over the last 25 years, the Hubble Space Telescope has changed the way we see our universe. From near-disaster, see some of its triumphs of science that are also amazing art. This show lasts around 20 minutes and is recommended suitable for ages 7+. Please Note - Hubble at 25 is shown at weekends and in school holidays only.

Join Mumble and his comical penguin friends in this thrilling, action-packed adventure
Experience every twist, turn, high and low as your seat moves in time to the 3D action on screen in our 4D Motion Ride. You can expect to be blasted with wind, smoke and water, and you'll even be able to smell the action!

For safety reasons you have to be at least 1.2 metres in height to use the Motion Ride.

From Earth to the Universe

This stunning 30 minute planetarium show is a voyage through time and space. Take a journey through the heavens to learn about the history of astronomy, the invention of the telescope and the amazing modern technology that allows us to see even deeper into the universe. This show was produced for the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Supernova Planetarium and Visitor Centre and is recommended for ages 7+. Please Note - From Earth to the Universe is show on weekdays only.

Sci fi Late at Life

Explore the Science Centre after dark, with extra sci-fi activities and themed cocktails from a galaxy far, far away! Includes entry to Robot: a collection of robot models, cyborgs and androids from TV and film, plus you can drop into Life's breath-taking planetarium - the biggest and best in the North - and take a trip on the 4D Motion Ride. This event is adults only (18+), and tickets are available to book now at life.org.uk.

Making Space: February - March 2016

The Making Space encourages visitors to get creative and learn to make something from scratch, often using recycled materials that can be found in any household. Upcoming events include -

• Lightboxes - Use different materials to make a light sculpture (27 and 28 Feb 2016)
• Pingball - Make your very own Pingball game and challenge your friends! (5-6 March 2016)
• Linkages and Automata - Explore simple machine elements and create a cardboard mechanical sculpture (12-13 March 2016)
• Soldering - Solder a small badge with flashing LEDs, a great task for beginners (19-20 March 2016)
