The Garden holds approximately 5000 taxa, the collection concentrates on medicinal plants and those of ethnobotanical interest, as well as rare and endangered species. We also grow plants named or introduced by people associated with the Garden's history. The mild microclimate created by the shelter of the city and the Garden's south facing aspect allows us to grow many tender plants, especially from the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands. The glasshouse range holds a collection of tropical, sub-tropical and Mediterranean species as well as back-up plants of those grown outdoors that may not survive a cold or wet winter.

World Woodland Garden

World Woodland Garden

  • 1 April — 31 October 2015 *on now

The World Woodland Garden, opening in April 2015, celebrates forest environments from around the world and the medicinal and useful plants that they produce. The World Woodland Garden is divided into three geographic regions, Americas, Europe and East Asia, and each region demonstrates the traditional and modern uses of various forest species including trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs.

Features of the new Garden:
150 new plants will be added to the collection, including a number of ornamental species grown to enrich the seasonal interest of the woodland
15 wild species of Galanthus will be woven through the planting to further enrich the Gardens existing snowdrop collection
A serpentine path will guide visitors through the new plantings; this path reflects the wilderness area that occupied that part of the Garden in the 1700s
Gathering spaces throughout the woodland area allow the Garden’s volunteer guides to present the collection to groups of visitors
Low earth banks will define the three geographic regions and provide a sense of enclosure
An oak pergola to the south of the World Woodland Garden will link it to one of the Garden’s existing wooded areas, effectively creating a ½ acre micro-forest.

The World Woodland Garden will support the Gardens key aims in highlighting human’s historic and contemporary usage of plants, helping to further connect visitors with the plants around them.
