Step back in time to the late Victorian period and experience Hampshire during the Industrial Revolution. Explore an authentically recreated network of streets, houses and factories, and discover a host of fascinating objects and vehicles from the Victorian era to the 1940s. Call into the Baverstoke Arms and drink in the Edwardian atmosphere. See our costumed interpreters perform historical presentations. See Woolmer, a 100 year old steam locomotive on static display at the train station. Families can dress up in Victorian costumes from the costume tent and try the 'Eye Spy' trails. The under 5s can have fun in the Play Post Office. There’s something for everyone at Milestones.

LEGO Mania at Milestones Museum

21 February — 15 April 2012

Come and watch 150,000 Lego bricks being used to create a magnificent mini-figure scale model of the great Tudor Palace, Basing House.
Fun things to do for children and adults of any age, including;
LEGO competitions and prizes, LEGO models on display, DUPLO and LEGO brick play tables, LEGO interactives, LEGO Brick trail - Activities that explore the connections between LEGO and technologies of the past, LEGO Minifigure Hunt, 'Brick Film' screenings, LEGO themed Café, Customise your own LEGO mini figure, LEGO workshops, including an expert building class.

Toys and Discovery (KS1)

Toys and Discovery is a two part session. The Toys part is led by a trained member of the museum staff and allows children the opportunity to handle toys from our collection. There are five boxes containing toys, and five mats which host different activities such as sorting activities and those which inspire discussion and debate about the collections. The Discovery part of the session is led by the school and allows the chidren to explore the museum through focussed tasks and dress up in replica costumes from the 1930s/1940s. Victorian Britain - Home Sweet Home (KS2)

A two hour led session followed by free time in the museum. The session begins with an input from a trained member of museum staff about using different types of evidence to find out about the past. This is then followed by group work using a range of resources (original museum objects, photographs, sounds, smells) to explore the themes of washing, food and leisure time to find out about life in an average Victorian family. Group size: up to two classes; Duration: two hour session with free time afterwards.

Victorian Britain - Who's Who? (KS2)

The session begins with an input from a trained member of museum staff about how we can use different sources of evidence to find out about people's lives in the past. This is followed by group work where the children use a range of resources (original museum objects, photographs, sounds, diary extracts and smells) to learn more about the lives of different people during the Victorian period. Group size: up to two classes; Duration: two hour session with free time; Level: KS2

Britain since the 1930s audioguide programme (KS2)

The audioguide programme for primary schools has won an award for its interpretation of the county's history. Audioguides are easy to use listening devices which combine narrative, music and sound effects. The guides give young visitors to the museum a fascinating and educational account of the different scenes, streets and displays within the museum. There are also hands on activities, including costumed role play and interaction with our interpreters. Group size: up to 3 classes; Duration; 2 hours followed by free time in the museum; Level: KS2

Early Years session - The Post Office

An Early Years led programme based around our Post Office gallery in the museum. The facilitator of the session shares a story entitled Jennifer's birthday which is based on the theme of posting letters. The children then have the opportunity to explore the Post Office and all its post related items including dressing up, sorting activities and our unique talking post box. The remainder of the session is spent exploring the museum through a specially designed I Spy activity. Group size: maximum of 30 children; Duration: one hour (half in the P.O., half in the museum); Level: ages 3 - 5
