Alnwick Castle, 'Windsor of the North', a foreboding medieval castle in Northumberland with stunning State Rooms which contain fine furniture and paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck and Titian. This castle has been owned by the Duke of Northumberland's family for nearly 700 years and offers much to the visitor, not just in the beauty and history of the castle but in the garden project, the country walks in wonderful scenery, restaurant, shop, museums and a host of other entertainments. We are also fortunate and privileged in being a location for the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets films.

Pupils will look at different people’s lives and lifestyles and will explore Alnwick Castle as a home in the past. They will gain information and inspiration from a range of sources including first-hand observation of the Castle site, discussion and the expert guidance of Alnwick Castle staff. The pupils' personal guide will take them around the site pointing out features of interest and giving insight into home life in the Castle.

Knights School - Life in a Medieval Castle

Primary school groups will especially enjoy and benefit from a session spent in Knights School. Here children can experience life in the Castle during the Middle Ages. Our experienced staff will lead the children in role-play, games and arts and crafts activities all designed to meet key stages of the 4 - 11 curriculum.

Stormin' the Barbican

Discover why and how Castles were built and designed to keep people out!
This activity uses a combination of discussion and role-play for historical enquiry. Pupils will begin their journey at the Barbican, Alnwick’s most distinctive military feature. They will be encouraged to use their imaginations to consider how life was in the past while carrying out this fun and interactive activity. With its characteristic medieval features, Alnwick is a wonderful setting for this adventure.
