Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

<img src="spacer.gif" width="450" height="1" alt="">

We offer a wide and varied programme across our two sites, showcasing the very best of national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists currently working in the region.
Our exhibitions are supported by a full programme of events.
At Newlyn Art Gallery we recently completed a project to enhance the outdoor spaces including secluded gardens, an outdoor cafe area and a flexible space where workshops and events can take place during the summer months.
The Exchange features a large T-shaped gallery which is also used as a project space, for film screenings, live performances and community events.
Both venues have a café serving snacks and light lunches, as well as a well-stocked shop selling books, cards, jewellery and gifts.
Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

Imran Qureshi working on a previous project.

Imran Qureshi

  • 1 July — 1 October 2016 *on now
  • 1 July — 15 October 2016 *on now

The exhibition will be presented at both gallery venues in addition to a site-specific commission for Truro Cathedral, making this arguably Qureshi's most ambitious UK exhibition to date.

The exhibitions at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange offer visitors deeper insight into Qureshi's work. The exhibition at Newlyn is quiet and reflective, presenting new and existing works, many on paper, reflecting Qureshi's mastery of the processes and devices of Muhgal Miniature painting, but also the confidence with which he subverts them.

For the single large gallery space at The Exchange, Qureshi has devised an installation where, characteristically, painted imagery spills from large canvases, across wall and floors. Appropriately this work reflects on the galleries relationship with the sea and plays with traditional devices in miniature painting to represent water in different states, reflective pools; rippling sea; falling as rain.

As part of the project Qureshi was invited to make a temporary work for an offsite location. The resulting piece will occupy part of the nave of Truro Cathedral for the first three weeks of July. It will be vast in scale, occupying much of the south aisle and spilling over rows of pews in the nave. The work will be constructed from 30,000 A2 crumpled, printed sheets carrying images devised by Qureshi and will be installed by a team of ten, working over four days under his guidance and in full public gaze.

ReStructured in the Meeting Room at The Exchange

ReStructured

  • 18 July — 8 October 2016 *on now

ReStructured was an evolving exhibition and residency, reuniting painters from our Structures / Strukturen exhibition in 2014 and inviting other international artists to work alongside them, responding to new displayed work.
Over three weeks in The Engine Room, 18 Jul – 6 Aug, the artists in ReStructured continued the exploration of colour, form and structure, informed by systems that underpin our lives; networks, frameworks and rules. With a programme of events ReStructured continued the dialogue that started with the original exhibition.
The display in the Meeting Room contains work that was the starting point for many of the artists, and for others, work that was made during their time at The Exchange.
