Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

The entrance to Newlyn Art Gallery

Newlyn Art Gallery exists because of a long history of contemporary art making in the far west of Cornwall and has celebrated contemporary art and supported the artists that produce it more than 120 years.
In 2007 the gallery reopened after a period of renovation with the addition of a new pavilion. At this time the gallery also launched its new space, The Exchange, in the centre of Penzance, which has enabled the organisation to take on larger, more ambitious projects across its two sites.
Formerly the town’s telephone exchange, the huge space retains the original industrial feel of the building and features a large t-shaped gallery and a striking glass facade that runs the entire length of the building. It is well suited to installation and social participation projects and its international reputation allows it to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall.
Together the galleries continue to present contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a programme of events, activities and education.
Each venue has a well-stocked book and gift shop plus a café serving snacks and light lunches. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but may not be allowed in the exhibition spaces during certain times.

Lost Languages and other voices

  • 11 February — 6 May 2017 *on now

Joy Gregory is one of the major artists to emerge from the Black British photography movement of the 1980s; a time when debates around the domain of representation were explored and challenged.
This major survey show brings together 16 bodies of work spanning 20 years. The title 'Lost Languages and other voices' refers to the works Gomera and Kalahari, in which Gregory draws attention to marginalised indigenous languages. Journeys also feature, with work made in South Africa, the Orkneys, Sri Lanka and the Caribbean.
Gregory’s work is influenced by a combination of race, history, gender and aesthetics; firmly rooted in concepts of ‘truth and beauty’.
Joy Gregory was included in our recent group exhibition 'Liberties' and this solo show, curated and toured by Impressions Gallery, Bradford, expands on those ideas while introducing new ones.

Night and Day, Freya Douglas-Morris

What Is This Place?

  • 22 April — 15 July 2017 *on now

The paintings in this exhibition share a sense of improvisation. Like the act of drawing, the works are a way for the artist to work through ideas. Their marks have been made with a speed and spontaneity, executed quickly to capture changing thoughts and ideas. Some of the artists have been drawn to a particular location, repeatedly, to better understand it. For others, it’s the social and political landscape of the world today they are questioning. Memory, and its varied versions of truth, often acts as a source or starting point. From the commonplace to the cosmic, the eight artists in this exhibition are questioning with paint, what is this place?
