Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

<img src="spacer.gif" width="450" height="1" alt="">

For almost 120 years, Newlyn Art Gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west. In 2007 the gallery was redeveloped and we opened a second venue, The Exchange in Penzance. With two venues we are able to offer a wide and varied programme, showcasing the very best of national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists currently working in the region.

At Newlyn Art Gallery there is a focus on painting and drawing, while The Exchange is well suited to installation and social participation projects. The galleries’ international reputation allows us to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall. Among the artists who have received solo exhibitions are Mona Hatoum, Christine Borland, Lawrence Weiner, John Armleder, Jill Bradley, Shezad Dawood and many others. The gallery has also hosted solo exhibitions of some of the region’s foremost practitioners such as Roger Hilton, Breon O’Casey, Sandra Blow and Michael Porter.
At our venue in Newlyn we recently completed a project to enhance the outdoor spaces including secluded gardens, an outdoor cafe area and a flexible space where workshops, meeting and events can take place during the summer months.

Hannah Woodman at Newlyn Art Gallery

Hannah Woodman in the Picture Room

  • 27 June — 25 July 2015 *on now

Concentrating on the amorphous nature of the landscape and seascape Hannah walks a line between abstract and figurative representations, trying to capture the effects of changing light and weather. The paintings are worked up in layers whilst trying to retain the spontaneity of paint gestures and allowing a sense of the place to emerge. Standing alone in front of the landscape is one of her biggest joys and she hope to recreate that sense of isolated engagement in these pictures.

Gunnar Jonsson, Hringsol, 2012. Part of In Search of the Miraculous

In Search of the Miraculous

  • 27 June — 19 September 2015 *on now

In Search of the Miraculous is an exhibition of international artists, inspired by and marking the 40th anniversary of the voyage made by Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader, who set sail alone in July 1975 in a 12½ foot dinghy Ocean Wave from Massachusetts to cross the Atlantic to Falmouth, Cornwall, disappearing en route.

In Search of the Miraculous includes artists that have a yearning for the sublime, a playful pursuit for new experiences and journeys, or a romantic contemplation of the sea and what may lie beyond the horizon.

No Title (Stacked Plates) 2010 by Robert Therrien

ARTIST ROOMS: Robert Therrien

  • 11 July — 26 September 2015

Therrien lives and works in Los Angeles and has had major exhibitions throughout the world. His work examines the viewer's relationship to scale. Often alluding to modest household items, such as a stack of oversized plates or a 2.5m high oil can, Therrien’s works explore the space between reality and the world of dreams, drawing the viewer into the realm of fables and fairytales, childhood games and unfinished narratives. The immediacy, accessibility and playful relationship with childhood in Therrien’s work offer huge potential for The Exchange to build upon its track record for engaging young people with contemporary art.
