Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

<img src="spacer.gif" width="450" height="1" alt="">

Newlyn Art Gallery exists because of a long history of contemporary art making in the far west of Cornwall and has celebrated contemporary art and supported the artists that produce it more than 120 years.
In 2007 the gallery reopened after a period of renovation with the addition of a new pavilion. At this time the gallery also launched its new space, The Exchange, in the centre of Penzance, which has enabled the organisation to take on larger, more ambitious projects across its two sites.
Formerly the town’s telephone exchange, the huge space retains the original industrial feel of the building and features a large t-shaped gallery and a striking glass facade that runs the entire length of the building. It is well suited to installation and social participation projects and its international reputation allows it to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall.
Together the galleries continue to present contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a programme of events, activities and education.
Each venue has a well-stocked book and gift shop plus a café serving snacks and light lunches. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but may not be allowed in the exhibition spaces during certain times.

Shelly Tregoning Exhibition

  • 14 February — 11 March 2017

This collection of tiny works is an abstract observation of bearded faces – each has a story which
forms their identity and the way each wears their beards enhances this identity.

“Recently, at a festival, I was amused by a barber’s stand where the main pursuit was pognotrophy- the art of cultivating and grooming beards. Why has the beard once again become so fashionable?” asks Shelly.

New work by Simon Bayliss

Simon Bayliss Exhibition

  • 18 March — 17 April 2017

Based in St Ives, Simon’s relationship to the Cornish landscape and sea feature strongly in his work, juxtaposed with humorous, erotically charged imagery and text. This exhibition features recent watercolours made in Cornwall as well as in London during a residency with Standpoint Futures at Chisenhale Studios. He has also produced a series of slipware mugs and plates to accompany the show.
