For almost 120 years, Newlyn Art Gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west. In 2007 the gallery was redeveloped and we opened a second venue, The Exchange in Penzance. With two venues we are able to offer a wide and varied programme, showcasing the very best of national and international contemporary art, as well as work by some of the best artists currently working in the region.

At Newlyn Art Gallery there is a focus on painting and drawing, while The Exchange is well suited to installation and social participation projects. The galleries’ international reputation allows us to bring some of the best art being produced around the globe to Cornwall. Among the artists who have received solo exhibitions are Mona Hatoum, Christine Borland, Lawrence Weiner, John Armleder, Jill Bradley, Shezad Dawood and many others. The gallery has also hosted solo exhibitions of some of the region’s foremost practitioners such as Roger Hilton, Breon O’Casey, Sandra Blow and Michael Porter.
At our venue in Newlyn we recently completed a project to enhance the outdoor spaces including secluded gardens, an outdoor cafe area and a flexible space where workshops, meeting and events can take place during the summer months.

Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2014

  • 21 March — 30 May 2015 *on now

Featuring 55 of the most promising artists emerging from UK art schools Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2014 comes to Cornwall with work by new and recent fine art graduates. Marking its 65th anniversary, selectors Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Enrico David and Goshka Macuga chose works by the most promising artists emerging from UK art schools from nearly 1,400 submissions, including graduates from Falmouth University, Stacey Guthrie, Edward Hill, Melissa Kime and Frances Williams. The resulting exhibition is an incisive snapshot of contemporary practice, spanning diverse media, processes, themes, influences and approaches - from moving image and performance to more traditional approaches to making work such as printmaking, painting and sculpture.
Showcasing final year students, graduates and artists one year out of study, the annual national touring exhibition has consistently acted as a barometer of contemporary art practice, shining a spotlight on the hottest talents of the year.

Painting by Faye Dobinson at Newlyn Art Gallery

Faye Dobinson in The Picture Room

  • 21 March — 25 April 2015 *on now

Using maps and star charts as a starting point, Newlyn-based artist Faye Dobinson plays with the presentation of disparate facts and information to generate abstract forms; 'constellations' that scatter themselves across imagined spaces. The resulting paintings, while abstracted, often speak of the sea and of Newlyn’s rich maritime history.
