The exhibition presents a body of new and recent work, in which the possibilities of painting and the act of observation are as central as what is represented. The abstract language Turnbull uses in her paintings – comprised of mark making, colour and texture - demands active looking over time. It is also demonstrated in the Drawing Tables (pictured above), a series of drawings made on printed paper stationery collected from around the world and displayed like artefacts in specially designed vitrines. Made in response to the subtle differences in graph papers, exercise book pages, tables and scores, these drawings create a sense of friction between the mass-produced and the hand-made.
