AL and AL: Incidents of Travel in the Multiverse
- 6 February — 10 April 2016 *on now
Incidents of Travel in the Multiverse, a major new solo exhibition of film, drawing, installation and a live concert hall performance, conceived from AL and AL epic sci-fi odyssey.
Incidents of Travel… is split into three journeys the artists have made with groundbreaking scientists.
The first journey, Icarus at the Edge of Time, is a multimedia spectacle that brings Einstein’s theory of general relativity to visceral life – and takes you to the edge of a black hole. Based on the children’s novella by America’s most famous physicist, Brian Greene, with a new score from renowned composer Philip Glass, plus visuals by AL and AL, the North West premiere of Icarus at the Edge of Time will be performed by the BBC Philharmonic on Sat 7 Feb at the Royal Northern College of Music.
The second journey, The Creator, sees AL and AL’s 2002 film premiere installed in our gallery. It imagines the computer pioneer Alan Turing, the father of artificial intelligence, visited on his deathbed by ‘thinking machines’ that have travelled back in time to meet him.
The third journey, also in the gallery, has been made in collaboration with Dr. Bart Hoogenboom, the nanobiophysicist who created the world’s first ‘real’ images of DNA. It tells the story of a space mission across the universe and a quest to discover a ‘cure’ for death.
