The Travelling Gallery is a self-contained, custom built mobile art gallery. It was established in 1978 by the Scottish Arts Council to provide greater opportunity for communities throughout Scotland to experience the quality and diversity of contemporary art at first hand. Since 1997 the gallery has been run by The City of Edinburgh Council, which continues to operate a national service.
The gallery tours two exhibitions each year, and usually visits a different venue each day. Each exhibition is accompanied by an education programme, which includes and education pack, and artist-led workshop events.
