Leandro Erlich: Dalston House

26 June — 4 August 2013

Internationally known for captivating, three-dimensional visual illusions, artist Leandro Erlich has been commissioned by the Barbican to create a public off-site installation in Dalston. The work resembles a movie set, featuring the façade of a late nineteenth-century Victorian terraced house. The façade, approximately eleven by seven metres, lies on the ground with lightweight mirrors positioned overhead at a 45-degree angle. When visitors sit, stand or lie on the horizontal surface, their reflections in the mirror create the illusion that they are standing on, suspended from or scaling the building vertically.

Sited at 1-7 Ashwin Street, Erlich will design and decorate the façade – with a door, windows, mouldings and other architectural details – to resemble the houses that previously stood on the block. Erlich’s installation will be accompanied by talks, workshops and live performances, exploring themes related to the project, including architectural history, urbanism, and perception, which will be developed in collaboration with local organisations. The project will be installed on a disused lot that has largely remained vacant since it was bombed during the Second World War and will be part of the 2013 London Festival of Architecture.

Accompanying Leandro Erlich: Dalston House will be a series of screenings across July in Ashwin Street and Café OTO exploring different takes on London and Leandro Erlich's passion for film.

The line-up for this summer night of ‘New sounds of Brazil’ features turbo-charged tropical tecnobrega dance music from the queen of the Amazonian dancehall Gaby Amarantos in her debut European show
adventurous, modernist Brazilian singer-songwriter Lucas Santtana who mixes Brazilian rhythms with dub, afrobeat, hip-hop and beyond, and 6-piece band Graveola, who bring their quirky mix of styles borrowing from the folk, rock, funk and blues songbook but with more than a nod to the fuzzy and freaky Tropicalia movement of 70s Brazil.
