The Sitting Room

  • 17 February — 18 March 2018 *on now

Dave Stephens, Anne Bean, Lewis Robinson

Utilising sculpture, installation, drawing and performance, the chair in its many permutations is the inspiration and starting point for diverse experiments with form and meaning.

From the humble cottage spindle seat to the majestic throne, the chair has become so omnipresent in our daily lives as to seem virtually invisible. Chairs are a natural extension of the human form, their construction mimicking the shape of a seated person, supporting and protecting the body.

Each of the three artists have established their unique interdisciplinary practices over several decades, and in this exhibition they celebrate the chair in their individual ways in order to generate personal narratives, playful interventions, and philosophical journeys.

Rocket Artists present Art by Johnny

  • 2 — 29 April 2018

Rocket Artists, a group of artists with and without learning disabilities will journey together to explore the notion of inclusive, collaborative curation. They will present an exciting, vibrant exhibition and series of events that reveals their curation process and celebrates the impressive artwork by young, prolific and autistic member of the Rockets; Johnny Carroll-Pell.

The exhibition coincides with World Autism Awareness week (26th March – 2nd April). It aims to provide opportunities for various communities of artists, families and organisations to connect through a celebration of art, inclusion and diversity whilst inviting us to re-consider what curation can be.

Alongside the exhibition will be an associated programme of talks, workshops, happenings and a book launch all taking place in and around the gallery. Amongst these events Henry Normal will be launching his new book about family life ‘A Normal Family’, local musician Tom Cook, who works with Daniel Wakefield and Beat Express will be hosting an event and there will be a talk by motivational speaker and horse whisperer Dido Fisher. With more to follow, featuring local artists, poets and writers – as well as some surprise guests.
