Aspex has a 33-year track record of supporting emerging artists and engaging audiences, through the delivery of a programme of exhibitions, off-site projects and participatory opportunities.

Artists such as Mona Hatoum, Richard Wilson and Susan Collis, all internationally acclaimed, received support from Aspex at an early point in their careers. This work has continued with projects including Emergency, an open submission biennial exhibition, offering key opportunities for artist exposure and professional development.

Since its relocation to the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth in 2006, the gallery has focused on finding ways to meaningfully engage its visitors by facilitating connections with artists and revealing the creative process. Alongside the exhibition programme, Aspex offers a relaxing Cafe Bar & shop selling unique crafts, cards and gifts.

A charity and company limited by guarantee, Aspex is a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England and is supported by Portsmouth City Council.

Additional info

aspex offers a programme of Saturday and holiday workshops for toddlers to teenagers. Please see our website for more details.

aspex does not have its own collection, but specialises in supporting contemporary artists at an early stage in their career and is a showcase for new work being made at a regional, national and international level.

When we use the term ‘contemporary art’, we mean new work by living artists.

Artists working today use an enormous variety of techniques, including many that might not even be thought of as being ‘art’ in the traditional sense of painting or sculpture.

You can expect to see this variety of approaches reflected in the diverse and ever changing programme of exhibitions at aspex as contemporary artists try to create new ways of experiencing the world.

Rotate Response

  • 27 February — 26 April 2014 *on now

An open call was made for artists, working in any media, living within a one- hour journey of the gallery to apply for the opportunity to use our main space as a studio, in which they will exhibit existing pieces and produce new work. All seemingly straightforward, but there is a twist. Rotate Response will begin with four artworks by the four selected artists (Anna Pickering, Jon Lockhart, Matt Parsons, Jo Willoughby) who will then spend time working in the gallery each producing three response pieces to one another’s new and recent works. The end result will be a show of sixteen works – four by each of the artists.
