BALTIC, the major international centre for contemporary art, opened on 13 July 2002. The landmark building is situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, Gateshead, in the North of England. A £46m project has transformed the former Baltic Flour Mills, a disused 1950s grain warehouse, into a leading international contemporary arts venue - one of the biggest temporary art spaces in Europe.

BALTIC presents a constantly changing programme of exhibitions and events, with a strong emphasis on new commissions. It houses five galleries covering over 3000sqm, 2 artists studios, a cinema/lecture space and a library and archive. The building also has 2 different food and drink spaces including Six Restaurant with amazing views of the River Tyne and the BALTIC Cafe Bar.

David Jablonowski

David Jablonowski (born in 1982 in Bochum) makes work which investigates the history and potential of communication in visual culture.

His sculptures, films and installations explore cultural aesthetics, display systems and information transfer, from calligraphic manuscripts to TV advertising and the World Wide Web.

Marcin Maciejowski

The work of Marcin Maciejowski (born Babice, Poland in 1974) re-presents everyday images of our time.

Using those already in popular circulation as starting points - found photographs, movies, posters, newspaper illustrations - his paintings naturally inherit the social and political implications of their source material.

Fabrice Hyber

Fabrice Hyber (born Luçon, France 1961) is one of the most inventive and influential artists of his generation.

Hyber’s continually evolving work includes painting, drawing and installation and is developed from a principle of echoes, in which each work is made in response to another.

David Maljkovic

This large scale exhibition of David Maljkovic (Rijeka Croatia, 1973) will present an overview which spans from his early work up to the present day and includes the Scene for New Heritage trilogy. This epic series of films brought critical attention to the artist.

Thomas Scheibitz

An exhibition of recent work by Thomas Scheibitz, one of the leading German artists of his generation.

This large-scale presentation including painting, sculpture and works on paper retraces the conceptual and painterly development of Scheibitz’s career with a particular focus on the theme of the human figure, and the determination of form between figuration and abstraction.

Thomas Scheibitz: One-Time Pad is organised by MMK Museum für Modern Kunst Frankfurt am Main.

Exhibition Explorers

Everyday 10.00am - 6.00pm (from 10:30am Tuesdays) Children and families have the opportunity to explore the exhibitions with special Exhibition Explorer packs. These packs offer new ways of enjoying and looking at contemporary art and are designed around each season of exhibitions. Suitable for children under 13 years old, these can be collected from the Information Desk on Ground Floor.
