Rugby Art Gallery and Museum's nationally known Rugby Collection of 20th Century and contemporary British art was established in 1946 and now holds more than 170 important paintings, drawings, prints and film works.

This year Rugby Art Gallery and Museum is delighted to be working in partnership with the Crafts Council to bring loans of high quality craft work to Rugby. In total eight pieces of craft work from the Crafts Council Collection will be shown alongside the Rugby Collection, including work by Grayson Perry, Tomoko Azumi, Claire Curneen and Jim Edmiston.


The eight craft pieces were chosen as they resonate in different ways with key pieces in the Rugby Collection and will enhance the display of Rugby's artworks, encouraging new readings of works that are favourites with our visitors.

Her approach to painting is determined by the subject matter and often brings together conventional painting techniques with innovative methods to create unusual surfaces, layers and textures. Depth and surface contrasts are particularly important in her work.

Building on previous work that looked at Japanese aesthetics and textile design, Screen is an exhibition featuring selected and new works utilising the conventional format of Japanese screens and also of wallpaper. Some of these paintings are celebratory and luxurious studies of bright, saturated colour and shadow. Other constructions lack adhesion - slipping, unpeeling and melting down to reveal contrasting layers.

Pip Dickens was born in 1962 in Nottinghamshire and lives and works in Yorkshire. She studied her Masters in painting at The Slade School of Fine Art graduating in 2000. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections and also in public collections in the UK. Her book 'Shibusa - Extracting Beauty' co-authored with Professor Monty Adkins examining Japanese aesthetics, art and music, was published in 2012 by University of Huddersfield Press.

From the earliest experiments with photography, there has been a creative relationship between photography and textiles. But where are we now? In an age dominated by images viewed through a mobile phone or laptop, when the screen has become a normal viewing experience, is there still a place for the sensuous appreciation of the material object?


Beyond Surface and Material is a group exhibition that presents the work of emerging and internationally-renowned visual artists whose distinctive practice has reinvigorated and provided new insights into the long-standing relationship between photography and textiles. Work as diverse as Jess Edwards' concerns with the importance of the makers hand and their engagement with craft, and Patrick Snelling's customised and augmented installations provide a glimpse into the richness and distinctive material concerns in the new tactile languages presented in this group show.

The annual Rugby Open exhibition presents the best artwork from the area. Artists based within a 15 mile radius of Rugby Art Gallery and Museum will display work in a variety of media from painting and photography to ceramics, textiles and 3-D work.
Many of the works are for sale, providing an ideal opportunity to purchase a unique Christmas gift.
A range of prizes are supported by local businesses and Rugby Art Gallery and Museum will offer the first prize of an exhibition in Floor One Gallery along with a People's Choice prize.

Named after the Site Director of the Tripontium excavations, The Jack Lucas Gallery at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum hosts a collection of Roman artefacts found at the nearby settlement of Tripontium.

Among the many exhibits on display in this gallery are a full skeleton of a human girl and a beautifully detailed belt-buckle depicting two peacocks by a tree. Both of these finds have been dated to the fourth century AD. Also present are Roman coins, tools and pots as well as an intact milestone.

This gallery also includes information on the history of the Rugby Archaeological Society.

The Social History Gallery at Rugby Museum tells the story of the people who lived (or live) in Rugby. Objects in this exhibition have been generously donated from local people and the collection continues to grow and change all the time.

The Gallery is divided into four sections focusing on different areas of peoples lives with the Community Life area focusing on establishments and events that brought people in the town together, including Schools, Sports, Clubs and objects from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and both world wars.
The Domestic and Family Life display contains objects that reflect the dedication to home life and includes games and toys, kitchenware and newspaper cuttings. The Personal Life case however, holds objects that would have belonged to one individual and been important to them such as scrapbooks, diaries, samplers and photograph albums.
Finally the Working Life area focuses on industries that made Rugby a recognised name all over the world. Objects from factories such as Willans and Robinson, British Thomson Houston and British Rail.

There are various other objects in the museum and an interactive kiosk for your information.
