Alphabet by Michael Craig-Martin
Michael Craig-Martin is one of the most influential British artists of recent decades. He was a key figure for the YBA generation of artists, many of whom he taught in his capacity as Professor at Goldsmiths College of Art. In Alphabet he has produced 26 screenprints in which the letters of the alphabet are overlaid with everyday objects such as a book, a glass of water or an umbrella.
Throughout his career, Craig-Martin has explored the iconography of everyday and designer objects. In alphabet, visually arresting images are set against a background of vivid monochrome colours and overlaid with a single letter. In this series, created in his signature style, Craig-Martin plays with the idea of the ABC children's primer. Instead of a direct 'A is for Apple', 'B is for Ball', the relationship between the letter and the image is more ambiguous and requires some guesswork; 'C' shows a knife, perhaps representing the word 'cut'. This series of 26 screen prints was published by the Alan Cristea Gallery in 2007.

eye 2 i, i 2 eye
The eye 2 i, i 2 eye project was set up as a collaboration between Rugby Writers and Rugby Artists' Group. The project involves writers and visual artists loaning work to each other in order to inspire new pieces of work to be made. Each artist has loaned an art work to a writer and each writer has loaned a piece of writing to an artist. The resulting exhibition will contain all of the original loaned work alongside the new pieces created in response. The exhibition promises to be an intriguing mix of writing and art works in a variety of mediums highlighting the wealth of writing and art that is produced within the borough of Rugby.
Rugby Writers: this group meet twice a month to discuss and review each other's work which includes fiction and non-fiction, poetry, songs and play scripts. Some members have had work published and several have achieved success in writing competitions. The group take opportunities to read their work in public and every year publishes an anthology of their writing.
Rugby Artists' Group: Founded in 2003 as the Rugby Artists' Support Group, Rugby Artists' Group provides networking, support, exhibition and development opportunities for artists based in the Rugby Borough. The group organises and leads Artlab which is a monthly experimental art activity for adults. Members of the group often work co-operatively with other local art groups and participate in events such as the regional Warwickshire Open Studios Week.

Rugby Collection 2012
Rugby Art Gallery and Museum's nationally known Rugby Collection of 20th Century and contemporary British art was established in 1946 and now holds more than 170 important paintings, drawings, prints and film works.
This year, for the first time, Rugby Art Gallery and Museum intends to show every work from the collection* in an exhibition designed to showcase the breadth, variety and vision of the fine art collection in Rugby. In what will be an ambitious and vibrant display, visitors will have the opportunity to view every single piece of work that has come into the collection since it's inception, revealing works that haven't been shown for a number of years.
The collection holds works by Eduardo Paolozzi, Stanley Spencer, Walter Sickert, Barbara Hepworth, Bridget Riley and L.S. Lowry. The collection is not on permanent display but visitors can see a selection of works in our annual exhibition. Visitors and researchers can also view the collection by appointment.
*The large scale installation work by Lindsay Seers will not be on show in this exhibition but documentation of the work will be available.

The Art of Social Enterprise
The Art of Social Enterprise will showcase recycled artefacts produced by inspiring social enterprises around the world. These community-based organisations support marginalized groups in need of income, acknowledgement and understanding. Featuring craft projects kick-started by using cheap and plentiful everyday rubbish as their raw materials, the exhibition celebrates the ingenuity of makers who transform trash into saleable artefacts. Sustaining the ideals of social enterprises, the workers are fairly rewarded and often receive health care, education and other social benefits, funded by the profits from sale of their work.
Contemporary recycled artefacts, both useful and decorative, will form the core of the exhibition display. These have been sourced from makers and markets around the globe by Ruth and Neil Thomson, curators of the knowtrash collection. Researching the world of recycling, they have discovered both inventive objects and the enterprising stories behind them. These stories will be told through video, photography and the maker's own words. Another section of the exhibition will be dedicated to UK social enterprises, showcasing exciting work happening in our local area.
The exhibition will include a workshop area where visitors can drop in free of charge, at any time, to be inspired by the intriguing objects and, using the same techniques as the makers, have a go at making a recycled item to take home.

Holograms 2
Following the success of the touring exhibition Holograms the first 60 years (which visited Rugby in 2008 during the 60th anniversary of Dennis Gabor's invention of holography in the town) collector Jonathan Ross has curated a new exhibition Holograms 2 which brings the story of holography right up to date.
With a stunning selection of 3-dimensional and animated images from an international body of artists and scientists, Holograms 2 clearly demonstrates the versatility of this amazing medium. Full colour is now available through a variety of techniques and the latest digital processes have made holography accessible to artists and designers who work with video and computer animation. Looking at some of the images it is hard to believe that the actual object is not really there, visitors are often tempted to look behind the hologram to see if there is a display case concealed there! Full colour holograms of precious artefacts demonstrate how holography can be used in museums to document and reproduce objects from their collections.
The exhibition also includes a selection of consumer products decorated with holograms that illustrate the many commercial applications of the medium.
For those who missed Holograms the first 60 years, Holograms 2 will be a revelation. For those who enjoyed the first exhibition, this one contains further delights and a truly memorable experience which will appeal to all the family.

We are extInked
In the year in which the world celebrated Charles Darwin's bicentennial birthday, Ultimate Holding Company embarked on a once in a lifetime artist led social experiment in partnership with several leading conservation organisations. One hundred rare and endangered British species were identified and studied, before being delicately illustrated in pen and ink by artist Jai Redman and permanently tattooed onto one hundred willing volunteers in a continuous three-day public event.
The Project has since remained live, with the focus of activity shifting towards the ambassadors as they work to protect and advocate for their species of rare birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, plants and fungi.
The exhibition will document the legacy of the project from its inception in 2009, through to the current work of the ambassadors. We are extInked brings together the original pen and ink drawings, documentary footage of the tattooing process, the extraordinary photographic portraits of the ambassadors created on a rare 19th century camera by Anatomy Projects and documentation of the progress of the one hundred ambassadors as they work to advocate for their species.

The Social History Gallery
The Social History Gallery at Rugby Museum tells the story of the people who lived (or live) in Rugby. Objects in this exhibition have been generously donated from local people and the collection continues to grow and change all the time.
The Gallery is divided into four sections focusing on different areas of peoples lives with the Community Life area focusing on establishments and events that brought people in the town together, including Schools, Sports, Clubs and objects from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and both world wars.
The Domestic and Family Life display contains objects that reflect the dedication to home life and includes games and toys, kitchenware and newspaper cuttings. The Personal Life case however, holds objects that would have belonged to one individual and been important to them such as scrapbooks, diaries, samplers and photograph albums.
Finally the Working Life area focuses on industries that made Rugby a recognised name all over the world. Objects from factories such as Willans and Robinson, British Thomson Houston and British Rail.
There are various other objects in the museum and an interactive kiosk for your information.
