Hopping Down In Kent - Take A Virtual Working Holiday

During the Victorian era hops were Kent's biggest industry and when they were ready to be picked, farmers would write to workers in Kent, London, Sussex and East Anglia and invite them to come down, stay in huts on the farm and work in the hop gardens for six weeks. From photo galleries and video clips to a virtual recreation of a traditional oast house, this site, put together by the Museum of Kent Life and complete with teacher's notes, offers the chance to see what hopping was all about.
