Hidden Garments

Created by the Textile Conservation Centre at the University of Southampton, this fascinating website offers a glimpse into the extraordinary world of the concealed garment. Seemingly a ritual protection of households and their inhabitants, the practice of delibrately hiding a piece of clothing or hat or shoe within the fabric of a building dates back to the Middle Ages. Every now and again builders, surveyors or DIY enthusiasts have pulled down walls to reveal a doublet or tricorn hat and this site compiles a whole series of examples that have been discovered in this country. As well as a searchable database of found garments, the site contains research, information and history about the practice as well advice on what to do if you find anything yourself.
