Exhibtion: Pedals To Medals, Coventry Transport Museum, Coventry, until October 14 2012

Tommy Godwin, the 91-year-old whose official retirement status seems to have done little to have dimmed his passion for all things cycling, is a man with a bronze medal from the last London games, in 1948, to his name.

He also managed the British cycling team at the 1964 Olympic Games, making his latest role, as the ribbon-cutter for this whizz through pedalled history, a sweet moment for the man and the museum.

“Having started my cycling career at The Butts in Coventry, I have been privileged to travel the world as a cyclist and cycling team manager,” he reflects.

“It was a great honour for me to open this wonderful exhibition. It tells the stories of some of the people, particularly those from the Coventry area, who have achieved great things on two wheels and made huge contributions to the sport of competitive cycling.”

Godwin has lent some of his memorabilia to the show, and other mighty saddle-sitters involved include Chris Boardman, Ernie Crutchlow (a Gold medallist in 1974, among other notable gongs), the Atkins family and Mick Ives, the winner of more than 1,000 races and the first pensioner to complete the Tour de France, in 2005.

  • Open 10am-5pm. Admission free.
