Five new permanent galleries will arrive if an £11.5 million bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, submitted in December following two years of consultations with visitors and the local community, succeeds within an overall development costing £23.5 million at the National Army Museum.

The Building for the Future project is partly an attempt to show the different sides of an army which, organisers admit, can “often be misunderstood” and “polarise” opinion.

One comment urged them to “tell the Army story as it needs to be told”, adding that an improved museum would increase the audience for a venue which has seen a significant rise in visitor numbers since the plan was initiated five years ago.

Janice Murray, the Director General of the museum, said it aimed to provide an “outstanding visitor experience” which would “inspire, inform and delight”.

The museum expects to find out whether its grant application has succeeded in the Spring.

The five permanent galleries:

Soldier A journey through the ‘lifecycle’ of a soldier, drawing on extensive testimonies to evoke the experiences of soldiers then and now.

Battle How battles are fought and major innovations that have driven changes on the battlefield

Society The complex, changing and sometimes difficult relationship between society and the Army, inviting visitors to question what shapes their views

Army Dissecting the history, structure and uniforms in the spirit of Army humour, revealing something of its personality

Discovery Often unknown aspects of the Army, such as its multicultural nature, as well as opportunities for the public to help curate the Collection and tell stories
