Exhibition Preview: High Rise Home Works at beam Gallery, Yorkshire, until February 15 2008.
Yorkshire-based photographer Kate Mellor is bringing the architecture and culture of Eastern Europe to England in this exhibition of new works that examines high-rise domestic dwellings.
A spectacle of craft and colour, the display is a though-provoking and sensitive response to not just the buildings but the heritage of Eastern Europe, looking at the layered relationships that make a ‘place’.
The body of images was developed when Kate was working as a Fellow for the International Photography Research Network in Poprad, Slovakia. Her research considered landscape, environment, history and locality, looking at the ways people construct notions of personal place within their broader built environment.
Socialist-era modernist architecture set in breathtaking rural landscapes are juxtaposed with intricate personal responses to Slovakian folk traditions, creating vibrant contrasts.
