Museums at Night 2013 preview: In the Company of the Curious: Steampunk, Dragon Hall, Norwich, May 16 2013
When the small but enterprising and energetic team at Norwich’s Dragon Hall missed out on a visit from Richard Wentworth by just five votes this Museums at Night, they vowed to put on a show to remember.
True to form, the antics planned for this evening in one of the country’s finest historic settings packs a mighty Steampunk punch for the ticket price.
For starters, mechanical theatre company Rapid Gambit have made an experimental installation using audience members to form a “weird and wonderful” space-show continuum where the ending will be left uncertain.
A live radio show has a vintage twist. And against a backdrop of music and sketches, the entertainer known as Sir Timothy Wilson-Knight will be demonstrating the “manly art” of Bartitsu, a form of Victorian dueling heavily based around sticks and (bring a brolly) umbrellas.
Elsewhere, there’s the enticing-sounding Lady Isobel's Polite Peepshow, dancing under the building’s medieval beams, a Twilight Tea Bar, parlour games and a den of iniquity.
It’s all hosted by Alexander Simpson, a gentleman poet and intrepid explorer whose gift for verse, apparently, is infamous throughout the Empire. Sounds like this event is in safe hands.
