The Scottish Mining Museum has been given an early Christmas present in the form of a £12,600 donation from the Coal Trades Benevolent Association of Scotland (CTBA).

The gift comes as the CTBA winds down its activities and gives away its funds, after more than 100 years serving Scottish Coal Trade workers, their widows, children and dependents.

"The Trustees of the CTBA felt it entirely appropriate that money should be made available to the Scottish Mining Museum," explained former CTBA President Don Mockett, presenting the award.

"It does so much to preserve the heritage of the coal industry and keep alive the memory of the communities who contributed so much to Britain's prosperity in the past."

Eric Clarke, a former MP for Midlothian and Vice Chairman of the Scottish Mining Museum Trust, said the Museum was "delighted" with the windfall.

"The Museum already cares for a number of items linked to the heritage of the CTBA," he added.

"This will help us to conserve national coal mining collections and to keep alive the story of the coal mining communities and organisations such as the CTBA for future generations."
