The Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne is celebrating Museums and Galleries Month by hosting an evening dedicated to wine tasting.

Passion for Wine, on Saturday May 20 2006, has been inspired by Passion for Paint, the gallery’s latest exhibition in partnership with the National Gallery. On show are works by famed artists including Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Gainsborough, Turner, and Sargent.

Guests will have the opportunity to taste wines selected by experts at wine merchant Oddbins, according to each artist’s respective birthplace.

“We were keen to try something different and we felt a wine tasting would appeal to our visitors,” said Julie Milne, curator of the gallery.

The evening, which is part of Night of the Museums, a European initiative to celebrate International Museums Day, will include a quiz to test visitors’ knowledge of wine and painting. There will also be the opportunity to explore the exhibition when the gallery is closed to the public.

Passion for Wine tickets cost £7.50. Call 0191 211 2121 to book in advance (recommended).
