Original images of the terrorist bomb blast which smashed through the Ikon Gallery in 1974 have been found by a gallery archivist.

Ikon is now looking for members of the public who remember the events, which tore out the front window of the gallery.

The evocative images show Ikon's then-director Simon Chapman nervously smoking a cigarette as he clears up the smashed glass from the gallery.

It is thought that the gallery was mistakenly targeted as terrorists targetted an army and navy recruitment centre next to the gallery.

The gallery hopes members of the public will share their memories to help build an oral history project on the period.

"We're looking for stories from the people of Birmingham who remember Ikon during the 1970s, from stand-out exhibitions to incidents such as the bombing," said Ikon Gallery Archivist Jane Morrow.

"We have plenty of official records – what I'd love to hear now are stories and reminiscences."

The memories will form part of an archive to be presented in the next Ikon exhibition, This could happen to You: Ikon in the 1970s, running from July 21 to September 5.

Anyone with any memories of the bombing or Ikon in the 1970s should email Jane Morrow or call 0121 248 0708.
