
Opened in 1990, this museum is located on the second floor of Salter's Mill, the last working woollen mill in Trowbridge.The Website has a slideshow tour which takes you through the History of the Woollen Industry. There are images and descriptions which describe the processes involved: carding, spinning, weaving, teasing, shearing and so on. These also describe the historical development of the industry from homeweaving to fully mechanised process. You can view the famous Spinning Jenny which caused riots by threatening the livelihood of hand-spinners in the 1770s as well as other memorabilia related to local industries and famous characters.The site is rich in Educational Information and gives details of National Curriculum linked workshops for schools including Evacuees, Everyday Life in Tudor Times, Child Labour in a Mill and A Mediaeval Mystery. Each has links to downloadable illustrated information sheets and there are also downloadable teachers packs and an on-line booking form.
