If you are interested in railway history Aberdeen Maritime Museum might not be the first place that springs to mind, but a quick look around their Website will take you to two interesting exhibitions on the theme. The Train Now Arriving... is an exhibition about the coming of the railways to Aberdeen with links to the Great North of Scotland Railway site, which also has its own picture gallery and section on the architecture of signal boxes. Rails Round the Harbour describes the history of the horse-drawn trains that reached out to the quays of the harbour from 1855-1914.As well as this the site explores the history of shipping in the area with some detailed essays on topics such as rescues at sea and pages that describe exhibitions on everything from sea monsters to life on an oil rig. For the 'buffs', the collections information provides detailed lists of individual ships.Aberdeen Maritime Museum is just one of three interesting and well-presented museums which can be explored on the official site for Aberdeen Art Galleries and Museums. Others are Aberdeen Art Gallery and Provost Skene's House.
