The London Jewish Museum is celebrating after receiving a grant of £100,000 awarded by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge on Holocaust Memorial Day.

This is the first time the museum has received a direct grant from the government and museum director Rickie Burman is delighted.

“This much needed grant recognises the work of the Jewish Museum which will open its doors on 17 March 2010,” he explained.

“The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day this year is ‘The Legacy of Hope’, a key theme highlighted in our new museum through personal stories of struggle, survival and hope.

He added: “We look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages and backgrounds to experience our interactive displays, exhibitions and exciting public programmes.”

The museum is set to reopen in March 2010 after a major redevelopment project and will tell the story of Jewish history, culture and religion through a series of new displays and exhibitions.

Displayed across four galleries, the museum holds a wealth of objects including film, photography, hands-on exhibits and personal stories, which will be used to explore British Jewish life and religion and contemporary issues around immigration and settlement.
