Two ploughmen from the North East open air museum Beamish, will be guests of honour at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Show this weekend.

Beamish ploughmen Jim Elliott and John Owens have been honoured with a VIP invitation to the county show where they will be the first ever to plough the land on the Newark Showground. The pair will also be wearing traditional 1913 ploughman's costume.

Jim Elliott is well qualified to show off his talents. He’s been ploughing with horses since he was 9 years old and is the only person ever to hold the British, Irish, Scottish and Welsh National titles at the same time as World Championship crown. He’ll be working at the Show with Prince, an Irish Draught and Lion, a 17 hands Shire horse.

John Owens has been working with horses for most of his life. He’s most often seen in the show-ring with a heavy horse turnout or in the decorated heavy horse class but, since taking up ploughing 2 years ago, has enjoyed some success in competition in England and Ireland. John will be ploughing with two young Shire horses, Tommy and Paddy.

The 126th Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show will take place this weekend, 9th and 10th May 2009, on the Newark Showground at Winthorpe. See www.newarkshowground.com.
