Castles across the UK have been illuminated by glowing rays of light and heritage spots nationwide have donned comical hooters as part of Red Nose Day 2009.

Legendary Welsh landmarks Castle Coch and Caernarfon Castle have joined Dudley’s ancient medieval castle and Jersey’s Mont Orgueil to shine red lights across the surrounding landscape in dazzling support of the annual fundraising day for £600 million anti-poverty campaign Comic Relief.

John Wallis, Site Operations Manager for Welsh heritage authority Cadw, said: “I am confident bathing red light over Caernarfon Castle and Castell Coch, two of Wales’ most iconic monuments, will provide a dramatic and effective visual backdrop and help raise awareness for this very worthwhile campaign.”

In the West Midlands, where the extravaganza has raised £1.4 million for local projects since 2007, the equine star of Bullring Birmingham sported a red nose to encourage visitors to add their support.

Coventry’s Millennium Place and Light Towers were showered with light, and the statues of The Roman Emperors at The Roman Baths in Bath had artificial noses unceremoniously clamped to their nostrils.

“With three different noses this year we had a joke about having the Emperors and Generals picking their noses in public, but I think it’s important to show people that even the Romans had a sense of humour,” said Stephen Clews, Curator of The Roman Baths.

Launched at the London Eye on January 29, this year’s Red Nose Day has also enlisted sites including the National Library in Wales, the Manchester Wheel, Glasgow Armadillo and Norwich Cathedral as part of its six-week visual campaign in aid of causes in Africa and the UK.
