It may have been 40 years since her pentathlon triumph at the Munich Games, but Olympic hero Dame Mary Peters proves she’s still Northern Ireland’s golden girl with this new Belfast exhibition.
Her gold medal win blazed the trail for subsequent generations of local athletes. And after spending her career championing these rising sports stars, Peters has been asked to pick out her top 40 for recognition in this commemorative photographic display.
George Best can be seen in his footballing heyday, Janet Gray as she celebrates her phenomenal water-skiing record and Wendy Houvenaghel as she wins an Olympic silver medal.
“For a small place, Northern Ireland is lucky to have such a wealth of sporting talent,” says Peters, whose gold medal is on display at the exhibition.
“It’s been wonderful in this Olympic year to spend time reminiscing about our achievements in the last 40 years and remembering some of those golden moments which have put us in the spotlight of the world’s media.”
