Veterans who will feature in the Hear my Story project joined Matthew Sheldon, the Director of the display, to underline the deeply personal nature of the exhibition.
It will open on the centenary of World War I, at the start of 2014, in the impressive new Babcock Galleries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s 18th century Storehouse 10.
“This exhibition will bring our visitors closer than ever before to the real Royal Navy,” said Sheldon, calling the project “dramatic and moving”.
“These are undiscovered stories from the ordinary people who were put into exceptional circumstances in the last 100 years.”
Arctic storms and the heat of combat in Afghanistan will be among the scenarios brought to life. A space will also be created for those who took part to tell visitors more about their experiences.
Two new exhibitions will take place each year in the special exhibitions area at the new venue.
